Got this email from Sidney a while back sharing a huge mistake I often see with my Layer Method students.

“Tim, I think I made a big mistake when I first started by trying to perfect each lesson before going to the next then trying to protect 2 then perfect 1&2 before moving to three. I now go through 1,2,3 and so on as each lesson motivates me because I start to hear the songs. The Layered Method is just what I needed and so easy to fool around and experiment. Thanks, Sidney”

I get this question all the time.

“should I perfect each lesson before moving on to the next?”

Answer: NO.

In fact, I believe it is literally impossible to perfect anything. So why try?

In the past traditional piano teaching has focused on perfection which may be where all these questions come from. They used rulers to slap, stern looks to intimidate, and threats to kick you out of lessons if you don’t shape up and get it perfect!

Of course not all traditional teachers are like this (so don’t get your rulers in a tizzy) but a lot were.

They Layer Method was designed to teach you to play like us regular imperfect humans do things. Each lesson perfectly compliments the next so you learn layer by layer. And in the long run you are actually learning things along the way that you didn’t even know.

When you go through the Layer Method you start to hear progressions, chord changes, and lots of other things that build on each other. And at the end of it you are going off on your own to play songs you love. Most likely before finishing.

But I have one rule.

Don’t worry about being perfect. Learning how to play piano (The Layer Method Way) is a lot like a child learning to walk. Just keep taking steps, one step at a time, and eventually you are walking, then running. And guess what? You no longer think about each step because it is so natural.

I am ready to help you fulfill your dream of playing piano.
