I was reading last night I came across a passage that said this…

…” You will never be able to have authentic communication, relationships, or conversations with another person unless you truly know and accept who you are.”

That hit me like a brick.

When I think about raising this little PianoFool (who will be 22 months in a few weeks), the thing I want most for him is to simply know, accept, and thrive at who he truly is.

Period.

It’s that simple.

And when I think about my piano students and the journey we all go through as wanna be piano players I see the same principle applying.

For instance.

Some know exactly what they want to do with the piano (their piano personality so to say). It may be to simply play ONE song, their favorite with both hands and have it sound awesome. I have seen this, of course they go on to play more, but this was their original goal.

Now, others, want to be able to play in bands, jam, improv, without being bound by anything. Complete piano playing freedom.

And then there are those who say “I want to do it right”. Classically trained, must understand theory and have probably spent 18 years in lessons trying to do it even more right every time.

There is not right or wrong answer.

It’s simply a question of WHO ARE YOU when it comes to playing piano.

Saturday night we went to a local hotel for a quick glass of wine before a friends birthday party in downtown Des Moines.

There’s an open grand piano sitting in the lobby.

I told wifey I was going to go play a couple songs.

So I did.

Just 3 songs.

And you know what?

That was good enough for me. Made beautiful music at a moments notice and loved every minute of it. Thats my piano personality.

Whats yours?

If it’s to do it “RIGHT” then the Layer Method is probably not for you.

If it’s to play songs you love, at your own pace, have them sound rich and full, be able to randomly sit down at lonely pianos and play… Then it’s definitely time to go for it.
