I saw an email the other day from this piano salesman guy and the subject line was this:
“What is the Neapolitan 6th Chord?”
My first thought was who cares.
I don’t really even understand what he is asking-but I am positive it is not important for the way I want to play piano.
I’m sure it’s exhilarating information for someone who is… you know… like really talented, but not for the PianoFool or my students.
And the fact is this guy is super talented. Way too smart for his own good. And very nice to boot.
So what’s my point?
I get people asking me all the time to sell their products to my people. Other piano programs etc. etc… And I haven’t done it yet. Why you ask?
Because if I can’t understand it, then how am I suppose to trust that my students will. Not that I am smarter by any means than my students but I have a very simple philosophy.
In so many words, it’s “give them what they need, not what they want”
The Layer Method was designed to be simple, step by step, with ZERO filler, and exactly what you NEED to play piano by ear with both hands… not what you want.
A Neopolitan ice cream chord may sound delicious, but you certainly don’t need that. It will only confuse you unless you are at a certain level.
Of which I am not, and neither are the majority of my students.
So you really have two choices when it comes to choosing a piano program/teacher.
1) choose someone really knowledgeable about piano (which means they will want to share it with you… ALL OF IT)
or
2) choose a program/teacher that is knowledgeable about playing so they can simply show you how.
And then, after you consider yourself a piano player, you can decide how much you want to know about what you are doing. Hence cosmo 16th chords etc.
