If you want to really play piano by ear and have fun doing it, then you will have to deal with Negative Nancy’s opinions about there only being one “right way” to play piano. Which of course is a lie.
New student Dave is dealing with one now. His words below:
“Tim, So far I think you’re program is great. I find myself practicing for hours because it is fun for me. I’m 65 years old and just learning to play. I started this about a month ago with another company and I was bored, learning scales and little ditties. I’m so glad I found your site. My daughter in law was looking at your method (she plays the old way) and all I heard was negativity, you’re not learning notes, you can’t read music, you’re cheating, that’s not the right way to play! I told her it has been the right way for me to play and I love it! Thanks for your help and a reasonable price for it.” Dave H
Here’s the problem.
Somewhere along the lines we were led to believe that there is only one way to play the piano correctly. And there is always somebody more than willing to point this out. I call them Negative Nancy’s.
Anyway…
…So here’s Dave, loving playing, enjoying practice, finally finding his right way to learn piano and then his Daughter in law wants to rain on his parade.
Swat her away like a fly.
That’s what I do.
No time for “right way” people in my life.
And there shouldn’t be in yours. There’s always another way. It’s up to you to simply reject that limiting belief.
Heaven forbid somebody have fun when practicing piano, I mean the nerve of that person!
You tired of not having fun practicing?
Maybe you have failed at other programs and teachers before and are hesitant to give it another shot.
The truth is it’s not your fault. You just haven’t found your right way to learn. Theres still time for you. It’s not too late.
And as soon as you decide it’s okay to have fun, play the wrong way, and get on with a dream then you can let me know.

Of course there will be Negative Nancy’s to deal with. One thing I like to say is this, “it’s okay, neither one of us can play like Mozart…but at least I am having fun”
