I have noticed something about other teaching programs out there.
They encourage you to do things that will make you “feel” like you are taking action and progressing when in reality all you are doing is wasting time.
Perfect example of this is detailed in Bobbies email below:
“Hi Tim, This is Bobbie Thrift. I just wanted to drop you a line to let you know how I am doing. I made a mistake, I wrote the letters of the keys on my keyboard. Try as I might I would look at the letters when I tried to play and it slowed me down. I wrote you before telling you I was having trouble with left hand playing with right. Well I finally caught on to your method of staying in one place on keys! Before I was jumping down the keyboard. I erased the letters I had put on the keys and I am playing much better with both hands. I’m still not as fast as I want, but now I can see progress. I now think with a little more practice, I can be playing at church. I am 64 years old and to begin with I thought I was too slow and never would learn at my age, but you gave me the confidence to keep on keeping on. Many thanks to you!!”
Labeling the keys is a colossal waste of time. PERIOD.
DONT DO THIS!
There are only 11 keys total. And for most songs (not Beethoven) but most popular songs you could get away with like 6 keys.
Labeling them only slows you down and creates terrible habits. Like having to look at the keys to make sure you are hitting the right ones.
It’s like training wheels for the piano, except there is no fear of you falling off the stool and hitting your head so they aren’t needed.
You will know by the sound if you are hitting the wrong ones and then you adjust.
Sometimes you just have to let go and trust the process.
And the process is simple.
Do what I say, and you will be able to play.
“If the glove doesn’t fit, you must acquit!!!”
Sorry, old OJ Simpson reference.
Anyhoo…
…Every lesson in the Layer Method of Piano is designed to be HIGH IMPACT… Meaning we don’t waste time on stupid things like labeling your keys, or finding a keyboard that lights up… All problematic to you actually playing.
