A while back I told the story of Chubby Dougie.
Little kid, drool on his lip, generally the kind that gets bullied.
When it came to sports he was a dud. Especially baseball where he led the team in strikeouts.
But he still played.
And one year he got a great coach who told him this:
“Dougie, all I want you to do is go up to the plate, swing at any pitch thrown to you regardless of how bad it is. Then after your three swings, come back to the dugout, give me a high five and get ready to go out in the field.
Well after striking out for multiple games, an accident happened.
Dougie hit the ball, was thrown out at first, and headed back to the dugout.
This time Dougie looked his ol coach in the eyes and said..
… “Coach, I’m a hitter”
Here’s the point.
Dougie was scared to death to go up to the plate until two things happened.
His coach gave him framework (swing three times and sit down)
He was emotionally unattached to the outcome (coach basically told him his job was to strike out which meant he was no longer failing)
