When I say “transpose a song” , do you know what I mean?
Well…
… last week I sent an email about what to look for when buying a keyboard. That prompted this email from Lee:
“Could you explain more in detail this bullet point below.
* Transpose button- You can use 4 chords to play everything until you get good enough to start playing in different keys. A little cheat, but whatever. Stills sounds great!”
So here’s what I am trying to say.
Let’s say a song is played in the Key of G. This means that certain chords will be played and others won’t. It goes back to the family of chords or circle of fifths. So in G, you will play a C, D, etc..
But what if you are trying to sing, and it is to low or high for you?
Well all you have to do is “transpose the song” into a different key.
So if you wanted to go up, then you could play it in A, which means you would play an A chord with D, E etc.
Now…
…. when you have a keyboard that can transpose for you. Then you click a button, play the same G chords, but the keyboard will transpose it up to A.
As if you were actually playing an A chord.
So realistically you could learn only 4 chords and play about anything with the right keyboard.
Is that cheating?
Maybe, but who cares.
You can learn to do it the hard way whenever you want.
It’s okay to take advantage of technology to keep you playing.
