You know that saying, “there’s no such thing as a dumb question?”

Well… that IMHBAO (in my humble but accurate opinion) is false.

There are most certainly dumb questions. And I get a lot of them.

Example from this week.

Question Asker: I have (insert competitors piano program) what’s the difference in yours? His is called play by ear. Please respond back.

Tim: What did you learn with (insert competitors piano program)?

Question Asker: Nothing…I looked at it, it sounded good, but could not get started. Is yours better? Your’s doesn’t sound as easy as his sounded.

Tim: Well… mine is no better if you don’t get started. And it’s definitely going to be harder to do than one you did nothing with. But unfortunately you won’t be able to find out because I am not going to let you buy mine.

Some may think this is harsh… but whatever.

I can tell from a mile away this person will never be successful at playing piano if they don’t actually go through the program.

I mean that’s pretty much a given.

So it’s basically a waste of everybody’s time to talk about what if’s…

My most successful students never ask dumb questions. What they ask are questions based on going through the program.

What they are struggling with (from actually going through it)

These are questions where the answer actually makes a difference.

And I love answering those, because I get to see them fight through a little plateau that leads them to the next level of playing piano.

And that is rewarding.
