Got an email from Kevin laying down the law:
“Tim, Ok you’ve convinced me, I’m gonna’ try your method………I’ve been “teaching myself” for the past year and a half. I’ve made progress, but wish things would go a lot faster…. so here goes. Don’t screw me over. I don’t mind investing the 97 bucks, but I really don’t have that money to waste either. Thanks, Kevin”
Here’s the thing about teaching yourself. It usually takes so long that you eventually give up.
Here’s a better way.
Find a mentor. Someone who is already successful at what you want to accomplish.
Two things come out of a mentor relationship.
1) You get to realize the actual skill or thing you want
or
2) You realize much quicker it’s not worth the effort to you.
Case in point.
I decided I was going to make my own belt. You know like one that goes around your waist and holds your pants up (our society seems to need more belts these days)
Anyhoo…
…I had a few choices. I could:
Get a book
Buy a dvd
Watch youtube videos
or find a mentor
So I went for the mentor option because there was someone there to actually help me as I went along my belt making journey.
Called my buddy whose dad was a leather worker and got his information.
I then proceeded to call ol Bob the “belt maker” to set up my first “belt making session”
Well…
… the long and the short of it is this.
Through this mentor relationship I found out it’s easier to just go to Sears and buy a belt.
Go figure.
And I didn’t find as much enjoyment in it as I thought I would.
No harm no foul.
You move on.
The bright side is I got to spend some time with someone who REALLY LOVES and is good at what they do. That is priceless.
The thing about piano is this:
You can teach yourself and be successful. It will take much longer, be more frustrating and overwhelming, but it’s possible.
Or you could find a mentor (like me ((PianoFool)) and figure out how to play quickly. With step by step instructions (and personal support) to make your time learning extremely effective.
Then spend the rest of your time learning songs you want to play, not how to play the piano.
The Layer Method Program comes with a mentor available to help you succeed.
