Current Layer Method student Rick had a HUGE moment last Christmas that he would have missed if he hadn’t learn to play piano.

In his words:

=====

Tim-I had to smile when I read this post…It reminded me of my experience last Christmas. My mother is an accomplished pianist but only one of her 8 children stuck with piano lessons…until I discovered your program…Several of my family members, including my youngest daughter, were at my mom’s for Christmas dinner. All, except for me and my granddaughter were in the kitchen. Linden and I were in the living room…with the piano…Linden was plinking at the keys when I said, “Let Grandpa scoot over and we can play” …I then played “Let it Be”, Amazing Grace, Silver bells (not to well at that time) and a noodling version of Pachelbel’s canon I like to play around with…Imagine the smile I had on my face when my daughter said from the kitchen ” Who’s playing the piano…the only piano player here is grandma and she standing here…My mom quite proudly said “that’s your dad”…absolutely a true story…. Sometimes we get caught up in thinking we have to accomplish a certain level of playing in order to be successful as a “piano player”

But it’s not about a certain level. It’s about the experience we get from playing. Think about Linden, Ricks granddaughter…

…She most likely won’t remember any softball game, dance recital, or cheer competition she may get dragged to across the country.

Those things get forgotten quickly.

But she will remember Grandpa sitting next to her at the piano and playing with her.

That’s guaranteed.

And that is a priceless moment.

So what’s more important?

A certain skill level, or the experience of playing the piano?

I think the latter.

I bet Linden (and grandpa) would agree.

And you know what’s really ironic about it?

She will probably say at some point later in life that both grandpa and grandma played the piano…

…the funny thing is that it took grandma years to learn, it only took grandpa about 3 months to be able to create that same memory.
