You were designed to succeed.

Literally designed.

But sometimes the reward of failing holds us back.

I have recently come to understand why some people succeed and others fail.

And it is very simple.

Some are more comfortable with the “rewards of failure” than they are with the “consequences of success”

You might be wondering what could possibly be a reward of failure?

Answer: The dream.

The dream is the reward of doing nothing, it is more comfortable, more exciting, more inspiring sometimes than doing what it takes to succeed.

We can think about how awesome it would be to do this or that, or if only we could do this or that etc. the dream is an awesome thing to not want to lose. So sometimes, in order to not screw up the dream we do nothing.

Now on the other hand, the consequences of success has all the things the dream has but also includes:

-rejection
-failure
-exhaustion
-misery
-hurt feelings
-lost friends
-loneliness
-discomfort

etc. etc…

We fail because we want to fail, avoiding the consequences of success. We succeed because we want to succeed. It is that simple.

That’s life.

Now let’s break it down regarding piano.

The Dream: To play the piano effortlessly, with both hands, in front of friends and family, for my and others enjoyment, have it sound awesome and be able to confidently say, out loud, “I play the piano.”

The Consequences of Success: Frustration, clumsy fingers, friends and family laughing at you as if it’s really possible, fighting back self talk saying you aren’t musical enough or have a good enough ear, not liking every song, computer issues, practicing daily, and lot’s of others.

Are you willing to do what it takes to succeed at playing piano?

OR

Are you better at just protecting the dream of doing so?

Your choice.
