learn chord piano

Here it is:

“Tim, I have a question for you and your classical playing wife though…Melissa (my daughter) asked me what program I would recommend for her to learn along with Linden (my grandaughter)…Melissa has zero musical lesson experience but she home schools Linden. I know the Layer Method works for adults but I wonder how effective it would be with a six year old…What do you and your wife think is a good solution for her? Rick”

Before I answer this question I think it’s important to know a little about both wifey’s and mine background when it comes to piano.

Megan took 11 years of traditional piano lessons. From age 6 to 17.

I took about two weeks total of traditional piano lessons before I realized I wasn’t going to be able to do it as an adult.

Megan went to college, never touched the piano except for a few weddings here and there because she could not play without sheet music.

She had no idea how to play the piano without music in front of her. It’s mind boggling when you think about it. 11 years!!

Fast forward… to a dark dive bar with two pianos.

Megan is asked to play some dueling piano shows and so she had to learn how to play differently. Basically using the Layer Method.

She could now play anything, quickly and on the spot. All of her 11 years worth of lessons were now being used to play without sheet music, any song she wanted.

She quickly became a local celebrity.

Now…. If you’re still with me.

I at the age of 33 could play nothing. I started learning the way I teach and then could play anything I personally wanted and sing along with my wife who was sitting on the other piano.

So why do I tell you this story.

Here it is.

Megan is 100 times the piano player I am. And it’s all because of her 11 years worth of traditional teaching.

I wish I had 11 years worth of traditional teaching and THEN learned my way. But guess what? Most adults won’t be successful at traditional later in life. It’s just the facts…

So to answer Rick’s question.

I would have Linden take as many years of traditional lessons as she could handle. Then when she is about to quit… I would have her switch to learning the Layer Method with Mom.

Once she does both, it’s game over. She will be able to use the knowledge of traditional lessons. That’s really the main problem. People who took years of lessons just don’t know how to get that knowledge out on the piano without sheet music.

Once you learn to look at the piano differently (Layer Method way) You then can use the years worth of lessons in unimaginable ways. It’s awesome.

Megan still says to this day that if she knew about the Layer Method way of thinking during her college years… she would have paid for school doing dueling piano shows and not even break a sweat doing it.
