I read an interesting article this morning on the decline of piano sales.
I wasn’t surprised myself but it really begs the questions as to why?
Grand piano sales in 2005 were around 35,000 units. Now they are closer to 10,000 per year. Upright acoustic pianos, and digital studio pianos are also on the sharp decline.
But you know what is selling just fine?
Keyboards. Under $200.
IMHBAO (in my humble but accurate opinion) there is only one underlying reason for this.
People, parents, adults, are all wising up. Why spend thousands of dollars on something that the majority of the students will never really play. So instead let’s just spend a few hundred dollars, hope we have the right teacher, and then upgrade if it makes sense.
My neighbor next door still has a grand piano sitting in his garage after 2 years of living in the house. You think if he could play that thing it would still be in there?? Never.
Stats don’t lie.
But some in the traditional piano teaching world do. Saying there is only one way to play the piano, otherwise, you aren’t doing it right.
Well…
…we have a lot of $200 keyboards get sold to PianoFool students who then upgrade to a $500 keyboard, and then upgrade to a $1000 keyboard. The reason?
They are actually playing the piano, with both hands, and loving it. Just like Lena who sent this email the other day.
“Hi Tim, sorry to have bothered you, I checked them again and they are playing fine, maybe just needed your magic touch, which by the way, I do feel you have on the piano. Again thank you for your time and the great lessons. I can actually play piano with both hands now after taking your lessons, I struggled at first , then I just kept playing them over and over , now what I thought was so hard comes easy. I would recommend these lessons to anyone who thought they could never play. Thank you for such great lessons. Lena”
It’s okay if you have bought a $3000 piano in the past and then got rid of it for free on craigslist. The fact is it’s not your fault. Traditional teaching wasn’t right for you. It wasn’t right for me or thousands of other students.
So I give you permission to try again. Get that $200 keyboard and be prepared to upgrade after you start to play with the Layer Method Of Piano. I will be with you step by step to make sure you fulfill that dream.
All you have to do is say, it’s time to sign up and just do it!
