Great question about how to memorize chords from Paul:
“Tim- I printed the chords that came with the intro video. Is there a trick to learning them. How can you remember all those chords?? I would like to start to practice finding those chords while waiting for the lessons. How do you learn them to remember them ??”
This happens a lot.
People think you have to memorize chords.
And when they get my “Crucial Chord Chart” they instantly get overwhelmed with the thought of memorizing all those chords.
Here’s the deal.
I play maybe 8-10 chords total.
I could get away with playing 5-6 if I just used my transpose button all the time.
I have considered getting rid of the chord chart because it’s kind of confusing when you haven’t been through my program.
You will never need to know that many chords.
And with the Layer Method of Piano, you don’t even realize you are learning chords.
You certainly aren’t memorizing them any more than you memorize how to tie all the different kinds of shoes you have worn in your life.
There are only so many variations and once you know a few, you will know most all chords you will ever need (or want) to play.
And they are all built in the same way.
It’s like a contractor building different structures.
He knows you start with the foundation, then the framing, then the roof (etc. etc.) but in the end, the materials may be different but the process is the same.
So quit trying so hard to memorize.
Just trust in the process of the Layer Method.
In the end you will know lot’s of chords and not really be sure how it happened.
It becomes effortless.
But only if the skills are layered on top of each other in a very specific way.
The Layer Method Of Piano way.
