At some point you should give up.
Or should you foolishly continue on?
I wrestle with this question all the time and I constantly go back to a great quote in the movie Big Fish in 2003.
“There’s a time when a man needs to fight and a time when he needs to accept
that his destiny’s lost, the ship has sailed and that only a fool will continue. The
truth is I’ve always been a fool.”
Age is a funny thing.
When we were kids we seemed to be fearless.
And then something happens.
As we get older we lose that sense of playfulness and we start to worry.
Worry about today.
Worry about tomorrow.
Worry about the past.
Worry about pretty much everything.
Then this worry paralyzes us from just having fun with something.
Like music for example.
I don’t know how many times I hear this:
“Am I too old to learn to play piano?”
The answer is always the same.
No…
…but what do you want to do with piano?
If you want to play like Beethoven then you may not get there.
But if you just want to enjoy playing the piano, play for your church, play with both hands songs you love. Then you are never too old.
The real problem is that fact we ask this question.
As if there is some specific date that says… “It’s too late now, you’re too old”
Hogwash.
In fact, I just saw on Americas got talent or something like that a 96 year old woman dancing on live tv.
She’s probably too old to do that.
Oh wait, maybe she didn’t ask that question and instead just went with her heart.
You want to play piano?
Stop asking limiting questions and start taking action.
You will be playing in no time flat.
