So my neighbor just started his very first DIY project. “Disaster In Yard” as I like to call it.
Last week he pretty much walks out of his house and decides he is going to build a patio.
He must have watched a home and garden show or something the day before. The scary part for us is his patio is directly behind our deck so we will have to look at it everyday.
Great…
… Anyhow being an expert on patio building (put myself through college doing landscaping) I was anxiously awaiting his first move.
You see the first move is the most important. And that is to simply determine the level of the patio.
If you don’t get that right, well, nothing else matters. At this point you have essentially bamboozled yourself.
Step 1 determines all other steps and cannot be skipped.
So as I watch him start to do the scratching the head cyphering thing, I notice very quickly he is on step 4. And then I know it’s going to be a disaster.
And as he starts asking me for advice I lead him to finally make the decision to hire a professional. Which he is now doing.
Interestingly enough, learning piano is the same way. If you don’t get step 1 right then everything else will be a disaster.
And step one to learning piano is asking yourself one simple question.
What do I want to be able to do on the piano?
Is it to play like Mozart?
Is it to play popular songs?
Is it to play in front of others and get paid?
Is it to sing along with?
Is it to accompany a singer in a band?
Once you answer this question you can the decide what kind of program or teacher will best help you get to your goal.
And I can tell you this…
… if it’s to play like Mozart then The Layer Method of Piano is definitely not for you.
But if it’s to play popular songs, sing along, accompanying another, or simply play for yourself at home, then it could be the ticket you have been waiting for.
But first you must answer that question.
Once you do that, then and only then, is it time to sign up for the right program. And if the Layer Method of Piano makes sense to you…
…then you can get started this weekend, today, and be playing something by July 4th.
