The other we talked about a book I had finished.
Keeping on that theme, I want to tell you about a book I just started that has caught my attention.
So… If you have ever felt like you have a collection of failures, but no successes then you will want to read this email and learn how to see those failures differently that frees you up for success.
The book is written by Scott Adams (the creator of the Dilbert cartoon).
Great cartoon, created a cult following and helped people across the world laugh at the daily grind of work they found themselves in. More Dilbert cartoons were stuck on refrigerators and office cubicle walls than any other.
In an interview I heard with Scott he basically said he was a complete failure at most things he tried. And he didn’t have a lot going for him in any one area.
He was pretty introverted, never charismatic, not exceptionally great looking. He wasn’t necessarily hard working, or gifted at anything.
But what he did have was a great way to evaluate his collection of failures from restaurants started to businesses he run into the ground.
He decided that as long as he took one lesson (or skill) from the failure that he could invest into his next venture, he would eventually be successful. And that’s exactly what he did when he started Dilbert.
He took a bunch of mediocre skills, combined them and created an empire.
Those skills were:
1) very bad drawer, but could draw something that resembled a person, computer, etc.
2) okay joke teller, but could never do it in front of a room, hence the cartoon as the media
and finally
3) an okay writer, but not great, so he had to keep his writing short and sweet.
And these “marginal” skills combined together made something great.
He always took skills from the failures before to finally make it big.
He was marginal in most things, not GREAT at anything.
That’s kind of the story behind the Layer Method of Piano.
Listen…
None of my students are going to play in carnegie hall. At least not that I know of.
But they are rocking living rooms, coffee shops, sanctuaries and stages all over the world.
And they are doing it by combining some marginal piano skills together to become great!
It’s really that simple.
So…
…give yourself a break and start playing piano with both hands like you’ve dreamed. It’s possible. And I will show you how.
