My adorable niece Willow asked me to teach her guitar.
I couldn’t say no. Even when what she wanted to play was non stop Taylor Swift songs. Ugh…
I only said that because it’s a natural reaction for a country guy like me. I actually kind of like her stuff. Don’t tell anybody.
So I have been trudging over to her house, spending about 15 minutes a week teaching her guitar.
She is going through the exact process I take piano students through. The Layer Method.
And yesterday we hit THE big milestone.
She showed me she had finally gotten the skill of:
“PLAYING THROUGH THE MISTAKE.”
It’s the biggie.
Not learning this skill is what keeps most aspiring piano players from ever realizing their dream.
Traditional teaching slaps your hands with a ruler if you hit the wrong note.
Even though you hit 100 notes correctly, you get scalded for the 1 you missed.
Here’s the deal.
Nothing is perfect. Nothing will ever be perfect. So you either learn to deal with imperfection or you get held back by trying to be perfect. Never happens.
Learn how to play through the mistake and keep going. Just flipping go right past it.
I kid you not that most people never hear the mistake anyways.
And if they are listening for it, well then, they suck. Play for somebody else.
Like yourself.
Once you learn this skill, It’s game over…
You will never be the same.
And then the mistakes start going away.
BTW: I did a dueling piano show a while back and probably made 2000 mistakes. They thought Megan and I were awesome.
We really fooled them huh! 😉
