Current student Kevin asks a pretty good question

“Tim-Thanks for your notes of encouragement! I am practicing your methods about 45 minutes a day, plus I play reading some music and applying your techniques to other music I am trying to play. Will mixing the two methods ( chords and reading notes) mess me up? Should I just do one or the other? Thanks, Kevin”

First off, Kudos to you for practicing Kevin.

Second…

…I don’t think it matters.

My gut feeling is the more knowledge the merrier, but sadly attempting to read sheet music is what kills most peoples chances of actually playing (at least for adults that is)

Eventually, I bet what happens is Kevin stops reading music all together. And just plays by ear.

My wife is a perfect example of this.

She can read sheet music like a master, but never does anymore.

I wish I had both skills, but I am not going to take 10 years to get good at something I probably won’t want to use anyways.

It’s a choice.

You wanna know the bright side of not being able to read sheet music?

You have an immediate excuse to get out of playing at weddings. And trust me those are the worst.

It’s better to be asked to play at the reception (and way more profitable)

It pays WAY MORE and is less hassle. And most of the listeners are there for a good time and have a very forgiving ear. 😉

So if you already know some sheet music you should buy my program immediately. You will see instantly how to use your knowledge in a different way.

If you don’t read music and want to learn to play without it then it’s definitely for you.

And if you aren’t sure, well, there is no risk and you should give it a shot anyway.
