Fay asks a very honest question.
And I intend to give her a very honest answer.
Inquiring Fay’s want to know:
“Hi Tim, I am 56 years old and have no musical background at all; have never taken a piano or any other instrument lesson whatsoever, but I love to play piano one day. My question for you is, have you ever had a student my age with no musical background who succeeded? Thank you Fay”
The answer all depends on your definition of success.
I would say NO if your definition of success is any of the following:
1) Play Mozart at Carnegie Hall
2) Be a master reader of sheet music
Now on the other hand, I would say YES if your definition of success is any of these:
1) Play the piano with both hands
2) Have the piano sound rich, full, and warm
3) Be able to play songs you love without reading sheet music
4) Want to sing and play at the same time (even if you stink at singing, but still love doing it)
5) Play for a local band
6) Play for your worship team at church
7) Play for family, friends, or just yourself to relieve stress and have fun
As far as the age and no musical background?
That is irrelevant.
I have several hundred students over the age of 65, with no musical background when they started, now loving being able to play the piano.
Some even over 90.
And one over 100!
So stop worrying about the things that don’t matter. Just say yes to your dream and make it happen!
