I’ve been reading the book called “the Power of Habit”
It basically gives you insight on why we all do what we do. It’s been pretty fascinating to say the least. One thing I was reading last night was about “inflection points” and how they are the most important part of goal setting.
What are inflection points you say???
Simple.
They are points that DERAIL you from your original plan.
For instance.
There was a study done with hip replacement patients. The study was meant to see how fast one group would recover compared to another with given circumstances. So here’s how it worked.
1 group was given a journal and told to write out their weekly plan to exercise in order to get keep the cartilage and muscles moving encouraging quicker recovery. The other group was told to do the same thing but not given a journal to write it down.
What they found out is the group who wrote down there strategy had amazing results compared to the other group.
But here’s the interesting part.
It’s not because they “wrote it down”. Just writing something down is good, but doesn’t really mean anything without this other piece. I mean how many times have we all written down goals that didn’t get accomplished…??? Lots
Because of the uniqueness of their surgery there was great pain in the act of moving. So the group with the journal would anticipate this pain (inflection point) and then… hear this clearly… PLANNED WHAT TO DO WHEN IT HAPPENED.
So Joe for example knew when he stood up it was going to be painful, so he wrote that he would take two steps to the right immediately to move past it as opposed to sitting down again.
Here’s why this is important.
We tend to do a great job with goals. But a horrible job with INFLECTION points.
But just think how much more we could accomplish if we planned for the pain of the goal??
Take piano for instance.
What keeps us from practicing??
*Tired
*Piano in the other room
*Remote control is easily accessible.
Lots and lots of reasons.
This week I want you to plan for next weeks practice. And then think about how to plan for the inflection points that will derail you. Have a strategy in place to overcome that little moment and see how much better you get at the piano.
You may be amazed how you learn to play piano by ear.
