We tried to go on vacation last summer about this time, but ended up crashing a family reunion…
…that wasn’t ours.
At a fundraiser earlier last year my darling wife bought a little trip to a place in Colorado.
Trip for 4.
The place was supposed to be like an old western town. And the guy who was selling it was promoting it as the greatest thing since sliced bread.
Well…
… it was not.
We had basically driven 14 hours to crash a family reunion.
With No Air Conditioned rooms.
Bunk beds for us to sleep in.
And the cowboy running the place had a big switch in his Air Conditioned house that shut the whole place down at 10 pm.
Lights out, literally.
So I had to make a decision.
And 12 hours after we arrived, I loaded up the group and we headed out. Gone.
I talked to the guy who sold us the trip and said, this isn’t going to work for us.
We expected something much different and we are high tailing it out of there.
The conversation didn’t go great…
There were tears, hurt feelings, and lots of confusion. Not by me though.. I was crystal clear on what needed to happen.
…And it was the right decision.
We totally salvaged the trip, ended up having fun, and seeing lots of different places in Colorado on our way back.
Here’s the lesson I got out of this experience.
If it’s not going to work, and you know it, then “bolt”.
Get out of there and accept the loss as a learning experience.
It’s no different with traditional piano teaching.
For lot’s of people they know instantly it’s not really going to work for them, but then stick around because they don’t want to hurt the teachers feelings.
Well…
…I give you permission to “bolt” if you already know traditional teaching won’t work for you.
Because then you can hight tail it out of there and into the Layer Method of Piano and completely salvage your piano playing dream and learn to play piano by ear.
It’s simple.
