If you’ve ever wonder what the “correct” amount of exercise is as you get older then you might want to listen to Mark Twains words.
I’ve recently been exposed to Mark Twain.
Obviously we all know who he is, but in a book I am reading about John D. Rockefeller he pops up a lot.
And for those who have been paying attention…Yes, I have been reading this book for about a year. It’s 800 pages and pretty dry.
But alas… I will finish!
Anyhoo…
…last night I read a quote by Twain where he was discussing the importance of NOT over exercising.
In his words:
“I get my exercise walking to the funerals of my more athletic friends”
Too much of something is typically bad for us.
Even exercise.
You either get hurt or burn out.
It’s no different with piano.
Too much learning on scales in the very beginning will MOST LIKELY lead you to burn out not learning really anything.
Too many hours practicing may just lead you to become bitter about music in general and not want to play at all.
That’s why with the Layer Method program we focus on how to learn to play in just 15 minutes a day.
And it works.
You can always practice more, and you will as you start to play songs you love, but until then we get it simple.

I am going to get a book on Mark Twain right now.
I have a feeling I could learn a lot from that guy.
