learn chord piano

PianoFool student calls me out on my Youtube question a while back.

If you don’t remember, heres the question again with Ed’s response.

Question: Why wouldn’t you just go on Youtube and learn to play piano for free?

Answer: frustrating and overwhelming unorganized (thats the cliff notes version)

Here’s Eds response:

“I would like to respond to your last question.

I have gone to YouTube to learn piano, successfully. I have learned to play “Lean on me” and “Hallelujah”. Using both hands! I’m working on a couple of others that I’ve downloaded. I also have learned to play a couple of my favorite Christmas tunes from sheet music. And, I’m working on a country song using the 12 bar blues.

But, here’s the deal. I never would have know about 12 bar blues, how to break these YouTube songs down to actually learn how to play them if I hadn’t gone through the Core 4 program.

“Let it be” has become my anchor song. When I’m frustrated with my progress, I go back and play the first song I learned, adding slight variation for the fun of it. Then I can go back to work on the other songs, having “reset” my brain and hands that, yes, I CAN do this.

Thanks Tim for kick starting my piano world. YouTube is a great source, but like sports you need to work your Core to perform at your peak.-Ed”

I told Ed that he is doing exactly what my program is designed to do for people.

Give them skills to go off on their own and play what they want to play.

You are learning how to see playing the piano differently and use that skill to rock it with both hands.

When you have this ability you can use all the free tools in the world and actually make them work for you.

Paying for lessons that leave you bound to sheet music or not knowing what to do without a teachers weekly lesson sucks.

Having a bunch of free tools out there like Youtube, but not knowing how to use them to actually play what you want, well that stinks also.

Paying for something that shows you how to really play the piano and use free tools however you want to use them.

Well…

That’s just plain smart.
