I have a guilty pleasure.
Surfing craigslist (the great piano graveyard) for old upright grand pianos.
And there is no shortage of people throwing out magnificent pieces of history and art that these pianos represent.
It always makes me wonder…
Why do people give them away? They were seriously expensive to buy.
Typically they spent a minimum of $2000 or more. Some even in the 10’s of thousands.
Thats some serious cashola. And now they all the sudden have no value to them and in some cases they will pay YOU to come get them out of their basement.
It’s crazy. But I get it.
You see… They don’t know what to do with them.
They can’t play it like they want to, if at all.
They’re no longer in tune.
And now they are just taking up space…
… a constant reminder they can’t play.
It’s sad really.
These older pianos, in my humble opinion, sound WAY better than newer ones.
In fact, my personal piano is a 1905 WH Lehman made right here in good old DSM Iowa.
And it sounds better than any $50,000 piano I have played at the music store. No kidding.
And guess how much it cost me?
Nothing. I knew a piano mover guy and he said he had a piano that was too good to throw away and not worth enough to sell it.
Hence a dilemma.
I said I will take it. So he loaded it up, delivered it to my house, and I now had my new piano all ready to go for the cost of only the delivery.
TIP: If you are looking for a kick butt piano for basically nothing, call you local piano moving company and see what they got laying around.
Or call them and find out what they charge for pick up and delivery and then hit craigslist and find the perfect one that is getting kicked out of their house because they couldn’t play it.
Go get the piano, or dust off the one you have.
Then sign up for The Layer Method piano lessons that will teach you how to really play so that you never put that piano on craigslist.
Guess where you can do that at? 😉
